Description: The Dornier Do17 was originally
designed in 1934 as a high-speed mail plane and was modified for the
Luftwaffe as a bomber in 1937. Seeing service in Spain in 1938, it was
found to be under-armed. The Do17Z, a more heavily armed version was
used in assaults on the Low Countries, Poland and France during the
early years of the war. The Dornier, referred to as the "Flying Pencil",
served as a bomber, reconnaissance-bomber, ground support fighter,
night fighter, and night intruder.
